Colossians 1:26

Posted on 18 May at 14:29

“Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:”

Context:To understand the verse better, let’s look at the context of Colossians The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the believers in Colossae, addressing issues such as false teachings and emphasizing the preeminence of Christ. In this particular verse, Paul is referring to the mystery that was hidden in previous generations but has now been revealed to the saints.

The Mystery:The mystery mentioned in this verse refers to a divine truth or revelation that was not fully understood or revealed in previous ages. Throughout the New Testament, we see references to this mystery, which is primarily the mystery of Christ and the Gospel. In the Old Testament, there were prophecies and foreshadowing of the coming Messiah, but the full revelation and understanding of God’s plan of salvation were not yet made known.

Hidden from Ages and Generations:The mystery of Christ was hidden from ages and generations. It remained concealed from the people of Old Testament times and the generations that preceded the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Though God had given glimpses and promises regarding the Messiah, the complete understanding of God’s redemptive plan was veiled until Christ came.

Made Manifest to His Saints:The mystery of Christ has now been made manifest to His saints. Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God unveiled His plan of salvation. This revelation is available to believers in Christ, who are referred to as saints. The word “saints” here does not imply a special group of individuals but rather all who have put their faith in Jesus and are set apart for God’s purposes.

Application:As believers, we have the privilege of understanding and embracing the mystery that was once hidden. We have the full revelation of God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. This should deepen our gratitude and appreciation for God’s grace and love. It also calls us to share this good news with others, as we have been entrusted with the mystery that was revealed to us.

  • Further Study:To gain a broader understanding of the mystery of Christ, you can explore related passages such as Ephesians 3:1-11, Ephesians 6:19, and Romans 16:25-27. These passages delve deeper into the mystery and its implications for believers.

Remember, as you study the Bible, it is essential to consider the verses in their broader context and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to grasp their true meaning and application to your life.
