Colossians 1:27

Listen to this article

“To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

Context: To better understand any Bible verse, it’s important to consider its context. The book of Colossians was written by the Apostle Paul while he was imprisoned, and it was addressed to the church in Colossae. The main theme of the letter is the supremacy of Christ and the sufficiency of His work for salvation. In Colossians 1:27, Paul is speaking about a mystery that has been revealed to the Gentiles.

The Mystery Revealed: Paul describes the mystery that was hidden in previous generations but is now made known among the Gentiles. The mystery is “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” This mystery refers to the indwelling presence of Christ in the lives of believers, both Jews and Gentiles. In the Old Testament, the concept of God dwelling within His people was seen in the tabernacle and the temple, but in the New Testament, through faith in Jesus, the presence of God is now within each believer.

Christ in You: The phrase “Christ in you” emphasizes the personal and intimate relationship believers have with Jesus Christ. When a person places their faith in Jesus, they receive the Holy Spirit who dwells within them (Romans 8:9-11). This indwelling of Christ transforms and empowers believers to live a new life. It means that believers are no longer alone, but Christ Himself lives within them, guiding, comforting, and empowering them.

The Hope of Glory: The phrase “the hope of glory” points to the future aspect of our salvation. It speaks of the confident expectation that believers have in the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promises, including eternal life with Him in glory. The presence of Christ within us is the assurance of this future hope. We have the hope of being glorified with Christ and experiencing the fullness of His glory in eternity.

Application: Understanding the truth of Christ’s indwelling presence and the hope of glory can have significant implications for our lives as believers. It reminds us that we are never alone and that we have access to the power, wisdom, and love of Christ within us. This truth should encourage us in times of difficulty, give us confidence in sharing the Gospel, and inspire us to live in a way that reflects Christ’s character.

  • In Conclusion: Colossians 1:27 reveals the mystery of Christ in us, the hope of glory. It emphasizes the personal relationship believers have with Jesus and the assurance of our future hope. As we embrace this truth, it should transform our lives and empower us to live for Christ’s glory.
