Colossians 2:19

And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.

Context

Paul warns the Colossian believers against false teachers who promoted human traditions and the worship of angels. In this verse, he identifies the root problem of such teaching: it does not hold firmly to Christ, the Head of the church.

Meaning

“And not holding the Head” describes those who let go of Christ, relying instead on other mediators or spiritual intermediaries. Christ is not merely a figurehead but the source of vital influence and spiritual life for the whole body. The “joints and bands” picture the church’s unity and interdependence, through which nourishment is ministered to every member. When believers stay connected to Christ, they are “knit together” and grow with “the increase of God”—a growth that God Himself causes and gives, not something produced by human effort.

Biblical connections

Paul’s analogy of the body and its growth echoes his teaching in Ephesians 4:15-16, where Christ is the Head from whom the whole body is joined and grows. This verse also implies that true unity among believers is not created by external structures but by the shared life of Christ flowing through every part.

Application

Hold fast to Christ alone for salvation and spiritual growth. Reject any teaching or practice that would displace Him from His central place.
