Colossians 3:14

And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

Colossians 3:14 (KJV)

Paul wrote this letter to the Colossian believers while imprisoned, urging them to keep Christ at the center of their lives. In the immediate context, he has just listed the virtues that should mark God’s people: tender mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance, and forgiveness (Colossians 3:12-13).

The phrase “above all these things” points back to that list. Charity is not one more item to add; it is the outer garment that covers and completes all the others. In the King James Version, “charity” translates the Greek word agape, meaning selfless, unconditional, sacrificial love. Paul commands believers to “put on” this love as the defining mark of their new life in Christ.

The second half of the verse calls love “the bond of perfectness.” Just as a belt holds a garment together, love binds every other virtue into a complete and harmonious whole. Without love, kindness, patience, and forgiveness remain incomplete and lack their unifying power. Love is the supreme grace that makes all the others what God intends them to be.

Colossians 3:14 calls us to make love the guiding principle in every relationship. This love is not based on feelings or circumstances but is rooted in God’s character and expressed through our actions.

  • Love in relationships: We are to love one another genuinely, treating others with kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. Such love builds healthy, harmonious families, friendships, and churches.

  • Love in service: We are called to serve others in love, using our gifts and resources to meet their needs. Love moves us to act selflessly and sacrificially, following the example of Jesus Christ.

  • Love as a witness: When we love even those who are difficult to love, we show the world the transforming power of God’s love in our lives.

As we “put on charity,” we allow love to shape our thoughts, words, and actions. This love is not merely a feeling but a deliberate choice to clothe ourselves with the very character of Christ. In doing so, we experience the perfect bond of unity and demonstrate His love to those around us.
