Colossians 3:2

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

The apostle Paul issues a foundational command that requires a radical reorientation of the Christian mind and heart. Following his systematic dismantling of man-made, earthly religious regulations in the preceding chapter—rules that have an appearance of wisdom but lack any real power to restrain the flesh—the believer is given the true solution for spiritual victory: a deliberate, upward shift in focus.

To direct one's deepest affections and mental focus heavenward means to deliberately value eternal truths, spiritual growth, and the righteous kingdom where Christ holds supreme authority. It is an active, ongoing alignment of internal desires with the will of God. This mindset evaluates all daily decisions, values, and ambitions through the clarifying lens of eternity, recognizing that true citizenship and ultimate hope reside in heaven.

Conversely, the things of the earth encompass far more than blatant sin. This category includes the temporary, decaying systems of this world—human philosophies, material wealth, temporal success, and self-centered ambitions that subtly pull the heart away from God. The human tendency, fueled by surrounding culture, is to seek validation, comfort, and security in what is visible and immediate.

This command calls for an ongoing, deliberate choice. By anchoring deep affections in the exalted Christ and pursuing holiness that reflects His character, Christians are freed from the futility of earthly pursuits. The result is a spiritually vibrant life, empowered by a heavenly perspective that transforms everyday earthly existence.
