Daniel 10:7
And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves.
Daniel 10:7 (KJV)
Context
Daniel 10 records a vision given to Daniel during a time of mourning and fasting while he sought understanding from God about the future of his people. The chapter opens with Daniel receiving a revelation from a heavenly being, described as a man clothed in linen, whose appearance was overwhelming. This encounter occurs in the context of the Babylonian exile, when Daniel was an old man and still devoted to seeking God’s wisdom.
Meaning
In verse 7, Daniel states that he alone saw the vision, while the men with him did not. The Hebrew construction emphasizes a contrast: Daniel saw, but his companions did not. Instead, a great quaking fell upon them, and they fled to hide themselves. This indicates that although they did not perceive the vision, they were acutely aware of a supernatural presence, and its effect was terrifying. The men’s reaction underscores the overwhelming nature of divine revelation, even for those who only sense its fringe.
Biblical connections
This selective revelation is consistent with other moments in Scripture where God reveals Himself to specific individuals for specific purposes. For example, in Acts 9:7, Paul’s companions heard a sound but saw no one, while Paul alone encountered the risen Christ. Similarly, in Daniel 10, God chose to reveal the vision to Daniel alone, demonstrating that His revelation is personal and purposeful.
Application
Daniel’s unique vision highlights the importance of personal intimacy with God. His ability to see what others could not was not a natural talent but a result of his devoted life of prayer, fasting, and seeking God’s wisdom. For believers today, this verse encourages cultivating a close relationship with God, so that we may be spiritually sensitive and discerning. It also reminds us that God may reveal His will to us individually, calling us to respond with humility and obedience.
Reflection
The reaction of the men who fled reminds us that God’s presence is awe-inspiring and sometimes frightening. Yet for those who know Him, His revelation brings clarity and strength. Daniel’s example invites us to seek God earnestly, trusting that He will reveal what we need to know in His time and way.
