Daniel 11:36
And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
Daniel 11:36 (KJV)
Context
Daniel, writing during the Babylonian exile, records a vision that traces the rise and fall of earthly empires. Chapter 11 gives a detailed sequence of rulers and conflicts, moving toward a final confrontation. This verse focuses on a king whose arrogance and defiance set him apart.
Meaning
The king acts according to his own will, exalting himself above every god and speaking marvellous things against the God of gods. His pride is absolute: he considers himself superior to all divine authority. The phrase “God of gods” affirms that the true God stands alone, and the king’s words are blasphemy against Him.
This ruler prospers only until the indignation is accomplished. His success is real but temporary, limited by God’s decree. The closing clause, “for that that is determined shall be done,” shows that the king’s rise and fall fit within God’s sovereign plan. Human arrogance cannot overturn divine purpose.
Biblical connections
The identity of this king is debated. Many interpreters see a historical foreshadowing in Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who persecuted the Jews and desecrated the temple. Others see an ultimate fulfilment in an end-time figure often called the Antichrist. Both readings agree that the passage warns against pride and points to God’s control over history.
Application
This verse reminds believers that earthly power, however impressive, is subject to God’s determined plan. When rulers or systems exalt themselves against God, their success is only for a season. Christians are called to trust in God’s justice and remain faithful, even when the wicked seem to prosper.
Reflection
God’s purposes will be accomplished. The king’s blasphemy and temporary prosperity do not threaten God’s throne; they fulfil His decree. This truth brings comfort and stability, encouraging believers to stand firm in faith, knowing that the God of gods reigns over all.
