Daniel 2:23

Listen to this article

“I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.”

The verse in question is found in the book of Daniel, chapter 2, and verse 23. Before we explore this specific verse, it is helpful to provide some context. In Daniel 2, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had a troubling dream that deeply troubled him. He demanded his wise men and astrologers to not only interpret the dream but also to tell him the dream itself, as he had forgotten it. This presented an impossible task, and failure to comply meant certain death for these wise men, including Daniel and his friends.

In response to this crisis, Daniel sought the Lord through prayer, along with his companions, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. God revealed the dream and its interpretation to Daniel in a vision. As a result, Daniel praised and thanked God, expressing his gratitude in verse 23:

“I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king’s matter.” (Daniel 2:23, KJV)

Now let’s break down this verse further and explore its significance:

Gratitude and Praise:The verse begins with Daniel expressing his thankfulness and praise to God. He acknowledges God as the “God of my fathers,” recognizing the faithfulness of God to the generations that came before him. It is a humble and grateful response to God’s provision and intervention in his life.

Wisdom and Might:Daniel acknowledges that it is God who has granted him wisdom and might. Throughout the book of Daniel, we see examples of Daniel’s wisdom and understanding in various situations. This acknowledgment highlights Daniel’s reliance on God as the source of his abilities and the provider of all wisdom and strength.

Answered Prayer:Daniel recognizes that God has made known to him and his companions the dream and its interpretation. In their desperate situation, Daniel and his friends sought the Lord through prayer, and God responded by revealing the secret to Daniel. This verse underscores the power of prayer and God’s willingness to answer His people when they seek Him.

The King’s Matter:Daniel acknowledges that God has made known “the king’s matter.” By revealing the dream and its interpretation to Daniel, God has granted him insight into the thoughts and concerns of King Nebuchadnezzar. This divine revelation would ultimately spare the lives of Daniel and his companions and demonstrate the superiority of God’s wisdom over the wisdom of the Babylonian wise men.

In summary, Daniel 2:23 is a heartfelt expression of gratitude and praise from Daniel to God for His faithfulness, provision of wisdom and might, and the revelation of the king’s matter. It highlights the power of prayer and the trust that Daniel had in God’s ability to intervene in impossible situations. This verse serves as an inspiration for believers to approach God with thanksgiving, recognizing His sovereignty and His ability to answer prayers and provide wisdom in times of need.
