Daniel 2:46
“Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him.”
In this verse, we find King Nebuchadnezzar responding to Daniel’s interpretation of his dream, which is described in the preceding verses. Let’s delve deeper into the context and significance of this verse.
The book of Daniel provides an account of the prophet Daniel’s experiences during the Babylonian captivity. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had a dream that deeply troubled him. He sought an interpretation from his wise men, who were unable to reveal the dream’s meaning. This led to a decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be killed, including Daniel and his companions. However, Daniel, through God’s revelation, was able to unveil the king’s dream and its interpretation.
Nebuchadnezzar’s dream involved a colossal statue with various materials representing different kingdoms, and a stone that smashed the statue, signifying the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom.
Upon hearing Daniel’s interpretation and witnessing the accuracy of his words, Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and worshipped Daniel. This act of prostration and reverence was a customary form of showing respect and honor in ancient Near Eastern cultures. The king acknowledged Daniel’s wisdom and the divine source from which it came.
However, it is important to note that Daniel himself did not seek worship or divine honor but attributed all wisdom and understanding to God.
Additionally, Nebuchadnezzar commanded that an oblation, or a grain offering, and sweet odors be offered to Daniel. This was another expression of honor and gratitude. The offering of oblation and sweet odors was a common practice in ancient Near Eastern cultures to acknowledge and honor individuals of high status or divine authority.
Although Nebuchadnezzar recognized Daniel’s God‑given wisdom and authority, it is crucial to understand that Daniel never claimed or desired such worship. Daniel consistently attributed his abilities to the God of Israel and never sought personal glory. He was a faithful servant of God in a foreign land, and his actions consistently pointed to the sovereignty and greatness of God.
In summary, Daniel 2:46 portrays King Nebuchadnezzar’s response to Daniel’s accurate interpretation of his dream. The king recognized Daniel’s wisdom and divine insight and expressed his honor and reverence through acts of worship and offerings. However, it is essential to note that Daniel himself did not seek worship and consistently attributed his abilities to God. This verse highlights the power of God to reveal mysteries and the importance of giving honor to Him alone.
