Listen to this article

The King answered vnto Daniel and said, Of a trueth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of Kings, and a reuealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reueale this secret. Daniel 2:47 (KJV)

Context: The book of Daniel records the account of Daniel, a young Jewish exile who served in the court of the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar. In Daniel 2 the king had a dream that troubled him, and he demanded his wise men not only interpret the dream but also tell him the dream itself. When they failed, the king ordered the execution of all the wise men in Babylon, including Daniel and his friends. Daniel, however, sought God’s help, received the revelation of the dream and its interpretation, and presented it to the king, leading to the king’s acknowledgment of God’s power and wisdom.

God’s Sovereignty: In Daniel 2:47 King Nebuchadnezzar acknowledges the superiority and sovereignty of Daniel’s God. He recognizes that the God Daniel serves is not merely a local deity but the God of gods—the supreme God over all other gods. This acknowledgment reveals a shift in Nebuchadnezzar’s understanding and demonstrates that God is not confined to the Jewish people but is the God of all nations.

God’s Authority: The king further declares that Daniel’s God is a Lord of kings. This statement highlights the divine authority and rule of God over earthly kings and their kingdoms. Nebuchadnezzar, the most powerful ruler of his time, recognizes that his own authority is subject to the ultimate authority of God, underscoring that all earthly rulers are accountable to Him.

God’s Revelation: Nebuchadnezzar also acknowledges that Daniel’s God is a revealer of secrets. The dream and its interpretation were beyond the wisdom and abilities of the Babylonian wise men. The king realizes that only God possesses the power to reveal hidden knowledge and secrets, highlighting God’s omniscience and His willingness to disclose knowledge to those who seek Him.

Application: Daniel 2:47 teaches several important lessons. First, it reminds us that God is sovereign over all things, including rulers and kingdoms; no earthly power can compare to His authority. Second, it emphasizes the importance of seeking God’s wisdom and understanding in all matters. When faced with challenges or difficult situations, we should turn to God in prayer and seek His guidance. Finally, it reminds us of the power of God’s revelation—He can reveal hidden things and provide wisdom that surpasses human capabilities.

In conclusion, Daniel 2:47 showcases King Nebuchadnezzar’s recognition of the supreme authority, sovereignty, and wisdom of Daniel’s God. It serves as a reminder that God is the ultimate ruler over all things, and we should continually seek His guidance and revelation in our lives.
