Daniel 2:48

Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.

Context

Daniel 2:48 sits at the climax of a dramatic chapter. King Nebuchadnezzar had a troubling dream, and when his wise men could not tell or interpret it, he ordered all of Babylon’s wise men to be killed (Daniel 2:12). Daniel, a young Hebrew captive, prayed, and God revealed the dream and its meaning to him. After Daniel explained the dream, the king declared that Daniel’s God is “a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets” (Daniel 2:47). The very next verse records the king’s response: he promoted Daniel.

The verse describes four specific actions by the king. He made Daniel a “great man,” gave him “many great gifts,” made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and made him chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon. This was not a small honor. Daniel, a captive from Judah, was placed over the entire province and over the very group of wise men who had failed to interpret the dream. The promotion came as a direct result of God’s revelation, not Daniel’s ambition. Daniel did not seek power; he sought God, and God exalted him.

Daniel’s elevation also demonstrates God’s favor and wisdom. Throughout the book, God grants Daniel exceptional understanding and discernment. The king recognized that Daniel’s abilities were from God, and he rewarded him accordingly. In the next verse, Daniel requests that his companions Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be set over the affairs of the province (Daniel 2:49). This pattern—God honoring those who honor Him—runs throughout Scripture and is fulfilled here in a pagan empire.
