Daniel 2:49

Listen to this article

“Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.”

Context:This verse comes at the end of Daniel chapter 2, which recounts Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and Daniel’s interpretation of it. In the dream, the king saw a great image composed of different materials, and Daniel, through divine revelation, interpreted it as representing the rise and fall of several kingdoms, including Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome.

After Daniel successfully revealed and interpreted the dream, the king acknowledged Daniel’s wisdom and exalted him in his kingdom. In verse 49, we see Daniel making a request of the king. It is important to note that throughout the book of Daniel, Daniel consistently displayed humility, wisdom, and loyalty to God.

Daniel’s request to the king was to appoint his three friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, to positions of authority over the affairs of the province of Babylon. This demonstrates Daniel’s character and his desire to see his friends honored and placed in positions of influence alongside him. It also reveals Daniel’s integrity, as he did not seek to advance himself alone but desired the well-being and success of those close to him.

However, despite his request for his friends, the verse concludes by stating that Daniel himself sat in the gate of the king. This indicates that Daniel held a significant position of authority and responsibility in the king’s court, being involved in the decision-making processes and having access to the king.
