Daniel 3:1
“Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.”
Historical Context:Daniel 3:1 takes place during the Babylonian captivity. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had conquered Judah and taken many of the Israelites into captivity in Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar was known for his grand projects and monuments, and in this verse, he makes an image of gold.

Nebuchadnezzar decides to construct a colossal image made of gold. The dimensions of the image are described as being “threescore cubits” (60 cubits) in height and six cubits in breadth. A cubit is an ancient unit of length, typically measured as the distance from the elbow to the fingertips, roughly equivalent to 18 inches or 45 centimetres. Therefore, the image was approximately 90 feet (27 metres) tall and 9 feet (2.7 metres) wide.
The Location:The image was set up in the plain of Dura, which was in the province of Babylon. This plain was likely a large, open area where the image could be prominently displayed and visible to a vast number of people.
Significance and Symbolism:Nebuchadnezzar’s construction of the golden image carries significant political and religious symbolism. As the king, he desired to assert his authority and promote the worship of the Babylonian gods. Constructing an enormous golden image was a way to enforce his reign and demand loyalty from his subjects.
