Daniel 4:22

It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

Daniel 4:22 (KJV)

The book of Daniel records the experiences and visions of the prophet Daniel during the Babylonian captivity. In Daniel 4, King Nebuchadnezzar has a troubling dream that Daniel is called upon to interpret. In his dream the king sees a large and magnificent tree that reaches to the heavens and provides shelter and food for all creatures, but a holy messenger comes down and pronounces that the tree will be cut down and stripped of its glory.

Daniel, who was known for his ability to interpret dreams, is called to explain the meaning of the dream. In verse 22 Daniel directly addresses the king and reveals that the tree represents him and his great power and dominion. The decree of the Most High is, that the kingdom shall be taken from thee, and given to another people; yet thou shalt continue in the kingdom, but in a mingled state. This declaration underscores that Nebuchadnezzar’s dominion is granted by God and that God ultimately determines the fate of kings and kingdoms.

The dream and its interpretation serve as a warning to Nebuchadnezzar about his pride and arrogance. The king’s power and influence had reached great heights, symbolized by the towering tree that extended to the heavens, yet his pride and self‑exaltation were about to be humbled.

Divine judgment is evident in verse 17, where Daniel tells the king that the judgment is from the Most High, indicating that God had ordained the events that would unfold. Following the interpretation, Daniel counsels Nebuchadnezzar to renounce his sins, show mercy to the oppressed, and humble himself before God. The king fails to heed the warning and is driven away from human society, living like a wild animal for a period of time.

After the appointed time of his humbling, Nebuchadnezzar recognizes the sovereignty of God, praises Him for His power and wisdom, and has his sanity restored. He acknowledges God’s authority over all earthly kingdoms.

The passage teaches the importance of humility and recognizing that all power and authority come from God. God’s judgments are just, and He brings about humbling to lead individuals to acknowledge His supreme authority. Overall, Daniel 4:22 serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty, the consequences of pride, and the need for humility before Him.
