Daniel 6:12

Listen to this article

“Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on Daniel 6:12, using the King James Version (KJV) translation:

Verse: “Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.” (Daniel 6:12, KJV)

Context:

In this chapter, Daniel is serving under King Darius, who had appointed him as one of the three administrators over the kingdom. Because of Daniel’s exceptional qualities and faithfulness to God, he gained favor with the king. The other administrators and satraps, jealous of Daniel, devised a plan to trap him and bring about his downfall. They persuaded King Darius to issue a decree that for thirty days, anyone who prayed to any god or man other than the king would be cast into a den of lions.

The Faithful Servant:

Daniel’s commitment to God was unyielding. Despite the king’s decree, he continued his regular practice of praying three times a day to the God of Israel. His loyalty to God took precedence over his fear of the consequences. This verse highlights the moment when Daniel was brought before the king, accused of violating the decree.

Confrontation:

The conspirators approached the king and reminded him of the decree he had signed, which forbade anyone from seeking a petition from any god or man other than the king. They were essentially presenting the case against Daniel, hoping for his punishment. Their intention was to trap Daniel by making him choose between obeying the king’s decree and his devotion to God.

The King’s Response:

King Darius realized that he had been deceived and manipulated by the administrators and satraps. He acknowledged the truth of their accusation and recognized the unchangeable nature of the law of the Medes and Persians. Once a decree was issued and sealed, it could not be altered or revoked, even by the king himself. This revelation placed the king in a difficult position, as he had genuine affection for Daniel and did not want to see him harmed.

Faithfulness Rewarded:

Although Daniel faced the threat of being thrown into the den of lions, his faithfulness to God ultimately led to his deliverance. God intervened and protected Daniel from harm. The story goes on to recount how Daniel was thrown into the den but miraculously survived the night as God sent an angel to shut the mouths of the lions. The next morning, King Darius found Daniel alive and unharmed, which further reinforced his faith in the God of Daniel.

Key Lessons:

  • a. Unwavering Faith:Daniel’s example teaches us the importance of unwavering faith in God, even in the face of opposition or dire consequences. He continued to pray to God despite the threat of death, placing his trust completely in God’s hands.
  • b. God’s Protection:The story of Daniel’s deliverance from the lions highlights God’s faithfulness to those who remain faithful to Him. When we trust in God and remain steadfast, He can protect and deliver us from the trials and challenges we face.
  • c. The Consequences of Jealousy and Deception:The actions of the administrators and satraps, driven by jealousy and deceit, not only led to their own downfall but also revealed the unchanging nature of the laws they used to entrap Daniel. Jealousy and deception often have negative consequences, and we should strive to be honest and fair in our dealings with others.
  • The Sovereignty of God:The king’s recognition of the unchangeable nature of the law of the Medes and Persians points to God’s sovereignty and His ability to establish and uphold His laws. God’s authority surpasses that of earthly rulers, and His will ultimately prevails.
