Daniel 6:13

Listen to this article

“Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.”

Context:Daniel 6 tells the story of Daniel being thrown into the den of lions because he continued to pray to God, despite the king’s decree forbidding it. The administrators and satraps were jealous of Daniel’s favour with the king and plotted to find a way to bring charges against him. They convinced King Darius to issue a decree that anyone who prayed to any god or man for thirty days, except to the king, would be thrown into the den of lions.

1. Faithfulness in Prayer:One of the remarkable characteristics of Daniel was his unwavering commitment to prayer. Even in the face of persecution and opposition, Daniel continued to pray to God three times a day. This verse highlights his devotion to God, stating that he did not regard the king’s decree but instead made his petition before God.

– Application: Daniel’s example encourages us to be steadfast in our prayer life. It is important to maintain a regular and consistent habit of communing with God, seeking His guidance, and expressing our gratitude and needs. Despite challenges or obstacles, we should prioritise spending time in prayer.

2. Courageous Obedience:In the face of a direct order from the king, Daniel chose to remain obedient to God rather than yielding to the pressure of human authority. He recognised that his allegiance belonged first and foremost to God, and he refused to compromise his worship.

– Application: As believers, we may encounter situations where our faith is tested, and we are confronted with choices that may go against our convictions. The example of Daniel encourages us to have the courage to obey God rather than human authorities when the two are in conflict. It is important to prioritise our relationship with God and remain faithful to Him, even if it means facing opposition or potential consequences.

3. Standing Firm for God:The accusation against Daniel reveals that his commitment to God was evident to those around him. The administrators and satraps noticed that Daniel did not regard the king or the decree but continued to pray. Daniel’s consistent witness and devotion made him a target for those who wanted to undermine him.

– Application: Our commitment to God should be evident in our actions and choices, even in the midst of a culture or environment that may be hostile to our faith. When we live in a way that honours God and stands for righteousness, it may draw opposition or criticism. However, our steadfastness can serve as a testimony to the power of God in our lives and may impact those around us.
