Daniel 7:26

Listen to this article

“But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.”

Context:To understand Daniel 7:26 better, it’s important to consider its context. The book of Daniel is a prophetic book that records the visions and dreams given to the prophet Daniel. In this particular chapter, Daniel receives a vision of four great beasts representing four successive kingdoms. The fourth beast is described as exceedingly dreadful and powerful. Daniel sees the Ancient of Days (God) sitting in judgment, and the dominion of the fourth beast is taken away.

Symbolism of the beasts:The four beasts in Daniel’s vision are widely interpreted as representing four kingdoms or empires that would rise in the future. Many scholars identify them as the Babylonian Empire (represented by the lion), the Medo-Persian Empire (represented by the bear), the Greek Empire (represented by the leopard), and the Roman Empire (represented by the fourth beast). The fourth beast, particularly, is described as distinct and more terrifying than the others.

The judgment:In Daniel’s vision, he sees the Ancient of Days sitting in judgment. This refers to God as the ultimate judge who will render justice. The judgment signifies God’s intervention in human affairs, especially in response to the actions of the fourth beast.

Taking away the dominion:Daniel prophesies that the dominion of the fourth beast will be taken away. This implies that the power and authority of the oppressive kingdom represented by the fourth beast will come to an end. This is seen as a divine intervention, where God removes the oppressive rule and establishes His own kingdom.

Consuming and destroying:The verse further states that the dominion will be consumed and destroyed until the end. This suggests a complete and final defeat of the oppressive power. The end refers to the ultimate resolution of the conflict between the kingdom of God and the kingdoms of this world, culminating in the establishment of God’s everlasting kingdom.

Application and interpretation:Daniel 7:26 offers hope and encouragement to believers, assuring them that no matter how powerful and oppressive earthly kingdoms may become, God is ultimately in control. It reminds us that God’s judgment will prevail, and His kingdom will reign supreme. The verse also reminds us that even in the face of challenging circumstances, we can find comfort in the knowledge that God will bring about justice and righteousness.
