Daniel 8:27

Posted on 18 May at 14:57

“Then I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.”

In order to understand this verse, it’s helpful to provide some context from the preceding verses in Daniel 8. In this chapter, the prophet Daniel receives a vision that contains symbolic imagery and prophetic messages about future events. The vision primarily focuses on two powerful kingdoms‑the Medo‑Persian Empire and the Greek Empire‑representing historical powers during Daniel’s time.

In verse 27, Daniel describes his personal response to the vision he received. Let’s break down the verse into its key components:

Daniel’s physical condition:Daniel says, “Then I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days.” The intensity and impact of the vision overwhelmed him to the point where he lost strength and fell ill. The vision’s content and the knowledge of future events were weighty and had a profound effect on him.

Daniel’s recovery:After being sick for a certain period, Daniel states, “afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business.” Despite his physical weakness and emotional astonishment, Daniel regained his strength and resumed his responsibilities in serving the king. This demonstrates Daniel’s resilience and dedication to his duties.

Daniel’s reaction to the vision:Daniel states, “and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.” The vision perplexed Daniel, leaving him in a state of wonder and amazement. He recognized the significance of the vision but couldn’t fully comprehend its meaning or implications. Even though the vision contained vital information about future events, Daniel was not granted immediate understanding.

This verse reveals several important aspects of Daniel’s character. He was deeply affected by the visions he received, and the weight of the knowledge he gained through them had physical and emotional consequences for him. Despite his personal struggles, Daniel remained faithful in fulfilling his earthly responsibilities.

The lack of understanding mentioned in the verse also highlights the mysterious nature of prophetic visions. While Daniel may not have comprehended the full extent of the vision at that moment, subsequent chapters in the book of Daniel reveal that he would eventually receive further interpretations and explanations for these prophecies.

In conclusion, Daniel 8:27 captures Daniel’s physical and emotional response to the vision he received, his subsequent recovery, and his astonishment at the vision’s content. It also emphasizes his commitment to fulfilling his responsibilities despite the challenges he faced.
