Daniel 9:1

In the first yeere of Darius the sonne of Ahasuerus, of the seede of the Medes, which was made King ouer the realme of the Caldeans, Daniel 9:1 (KJV)

This verse serves as an introduction to the chapter and provides important historical context. It informs us that the events of Daniel 9 occur in the first year of the reign of Darius, the son of Ahasuerus. Some readers note that this Ahasuerus may be distinct from the Persian king mentioned in the book of Esther, though the text does not specify.

To gain a better understanding of Daniel 9:1, it is helpful to explore the broader context of the book of Daniel. The book is divided into two main sections. The first section, comprising chapters 1‑6, focuses on Daniel’s experiences in the Babylonian court during the captivity of Judah. The second section, comprising chapters 7‑12, includes prophetic visions given to Daniel. Chapter 9 falls within the second section, where Daniel receives a prophetic vision concerning the future of Israel and the coming of the Messiah.

In this vision Daniel seeks understanding about the seventy‑year period of exile foretold by the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 25:11‑12, 29:10). Through prayer and seeking God’s guidance, Daniel receives an angelic visitation and an explanation of the vision. Returning to Daniel 9:1, we find that it sets the stage for Daniel’s prayer and the subsequent revelations.

Darius, a Mede, is described as being made king over the realm of the Chaldeans, succeeding the Babylonian king Belshazzar. This transition in power creates the setting for Daniel’s prayer and the unfolding events recorded in chapter 9.

In conclusion, Daniel 9:1 establishes the historical backdrop against which the events of Daniel 9 take place. It introduces the reign of Darius the Mede and provides the context for Daniel’s prayer and the revelations that follow. The chapter as a whole holds great significance in biblical prophecy, particularly in its foreshadowing of the coming of the Messiah and the fulfilment of God’s plans for Israel.
