Deuteronomy 1:14

And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.

Deuteronomy 1:14 (KJV)

Moses speaks to Israel on the plains of Moab, retelling their journey from Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. He recalls how the people agreed to his plan for sharing leadership. Moses had said he could not carry their problems and disputes alone (Deut. 1:12), so he asked each tribe to choose wise, respected men to serve as judges. The people answered with one voice, accepting the plan as good for them.

The people’s reply, “The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do,” shows more than polite agreement. They recognized that Moses spoke with divine authority. Their willing acceptance meant they trusted God’s direction through him. This was not forced obedience but a joyful, communal yes. They saw the plan as beneficial for themselves and for Moses, easing his heavy load.

This moment of unity stands in contrast to later murmuring and rebellion in the wilderness. Here the people cooperate with God’s order. Their agreement led to the appointment of leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens (Deut. 1:15). The next verses charge these judges to hear cases fairly, without partiality (Deut. 1:16-17). Thus, the people’s positive response set the stage for just governance.

Godly leadership involves delegation. Moses did not cling to power but shared responsibility with capable men. The community’s affirmation of wise leaders is good. Believers today can support godly leaders and accept their guidance when it aligns with Scripture. Cooperation and shared responsibility strengthen the church and prevent burnout.

When God speaks through appointed leaders, a willing heart brings blessing. The people’s answer was not coerced; it was a free, positive response. Consider how you respond to godly counsel. Do you recognize God’s wisdom in it? Are you quick to agree and participate? Unity and order come when God’s people affirm and follow the structures He establishes.
