Deuteronomy 10:13
To keepe the Commandements of the Lord, and his Statutes, which I commaund thee this day for thy good? Deuteronomy 10:13 (KJV)
Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Old Testament, records Moses’ speeches to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. In this passage Moses reminds the people of their covenant with God and stresses the importance of keeping His commandments and statutes.
The verse highlights the significance of obeying the LORD’s commandments. These commands were not given arbitrarily but for the benefit and well‑being of God’s people. By following His statutes the Israelites would experience blessings and favour from God.
The reference to “the commandments of the LORD” and “His statutes” embraces the whole body of divine instruction delivered through Moses. It includes the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1‑17) as well as the numerous laws recorded in Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers, covering worship, morality, justice and social relationships.
Moses points out that God’s commandments are not burdensome but are given for the people’s good. Obedience brings order, righteousness and harmony; it yields protection and divine blessing. Keeping the law also demonstrates the Israelites’ love and commitment to the LORD.
Although originally addressed to Israel, the principle applies to believers today. Christians are called to follow the commandments of Jesus Christ (John 14:15). Jesus summed the law by urging love of God and love of neighbor (Matthew 22:36‑40). Living according to God’s principles brings His blessings, nurtures faith, and shows love for Him.
It is important to recognize that keeping God’s commandments does not earn salvation. The New Testament teaches that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:8‑9). Yet obedience becomes an expression of that faith and love (John 14:21), a desire to live a life pleasing to God.
