Deuteronomy 11:27
A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day:
Deuteronomy 11:27 (KJV)
Context
Moses speaks to Israel on the plains of Moab, just before they enter the Promised Land. In Deuteronomy 11:26-28, he sets before the people a blessing and a curse. The blessing comes with obedience to God’s commandments, while the curse follows disobedience. This verse is part of that solemn choice.
Meaning
The phrase “this day” shows that God’s commands are not distant or abstract. They are given to the present generation, demanding an immediate response. Obedience is not merely external compliance; it is a response to God’s covenant relationship with His people. The blessing promised includes material provisions, as Deuteronomy 28:1-6 later explains, but it also includes spiritual and relational blessings: a closer relationship with God, peace of mind, integrity, and righteousness. God’s commandments are not arbitrary; they are given for the well-being of His people. Obedience aligns them with His will, opening the way for His blessing.
Biblical connections
The broader biblical narrative shows these commandments echoed throughout Scripture, including the moral and ethical laws for Israel and the teachings of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. They reflect God’s will and guide believers toward a life that pleases Him. Obedience is a central expression of love for God and trust in His promises. In the New Testament, Christ perfectly obeyed and became the source of blessing for all who believe, though this connection is not explicit in this verse.
Application
Christians today are called to obey God’s commandments as revealed in the Bible. Through obedience, they position themselves to receive God’s blessings and experience the abundant life He desires. Obedience does not earn salvation; salvation is a gift received through faith in Jesus Christ. Obedience is a grateful response to God’s love and grace, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Reflection
The conditional nature of the blessing does not imply that God’s love is earned. Rather, a life of obedience aligns the believer with God’s will, opening the way for the blessings He has already purposed to give. This verse encourages believers to live obediently, trusting in God’s faithfulness and experiencing the fullness of His blessings in their lives.
