Deuteronomy 17:7
The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you.
Deuteronomy 17:7 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and is attributed to Moses. It contains the laws and instructions God gave to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. This verse concludes a passage about the punishment for idolatry and false worship, following the requirement in Deuteronomy 17:6 that a person may be put to death only on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
Meaning
The witnesses who testified against the accused were to be the first to lay hands on him to carry out the death sentence, and then all the people were to join in. This practice served as a further test of the witnesses’ testimony: if they were willing to initiate the execution without reluctance, it confirmed their testimony and showed their zeal for God’s honor. It also made the witnesses personally accountable for the truth of their accusation, discouraging false testimony and protecting the accused from injustice.
The phrase “put the evil away from among you” is a recurring formula in Deuteronomy. It emphasizes the seriousness with which God viewed idolatry, as it would lead the people away from Him. By carrying out the punishment, the community was purged of such practices and preserved its spiritual integrity and holiness before God.
Biblical connections
The principle of multiple witnesses is foundational in the law and is later echoed in the New Testament as a safeguard for justice in the church, as seen in Matthew 18:16, 2 Corinthians 13:1, and 1 Timothy 5:19. This connection shows the enduring importance of truthful testimony and due process in God’s dealings with His people.
Application
While this verse speaks specifically about idolatry, it teaches broader principles about upholding justice and maintaining spiritual purity. As Christians, we are called to live in accordance with God’s standards and uphold the truth. We should be vigilant in recognizing and confronting sin within our communities, seeking to address it in a way that promotes repentance, restoration, and righteousness.
Although the Old Testament law emphasized strict punishment for idolatry, we live under the New Covenant established through Jesus Christ. Through His sacrifice on the cross, Jesus provided a way for forgiveness and redemption. While we still strive to live according to God’s commands, we are also called to extend grace and forgiveness to those who repent and turn to Him.
Reflection
Deuteronomy 17:7 highlights the importance of witnesses in capital cases, the removal of evil from the community, and the commitment to upholding God’s law. The seriousness of idolatry, the value of truthful testimony, and the community’s responsibility to maintain holiness all point to God’s desire for a people set apart for Him. For today’s believer, this verse invites sober reflection on the weight of sin, the need for integrity in our words, and the grace that is available through Christ.
