Deuteronomy 19:18

And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;

Deuteronomy 19:18 (KJV)

Deuteronomy records Moses’ speeches to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. Chapter 19 includes laws about cities of refuge, but verse 18 turns to handling false testimony.

Moses instructs judges to conduct a thorough investigation when a witness is accused of lying. The phrase “diligent inquisition” shows that justice must not be hasty or superficial. The judges must examine evidence carefully and determine whether the witness has testified falsely against a fellow Israelite.

If proven false, the witness receives the punishment intended for the accused, as the next verse states (Deuteronomy 19:19). This severe penalty deters perjury and protects the legal process. False testimony could cause wrongful conviction or acquittal, undermining the just society God desired for Israel.

The command reflects God’s character as a God of truth and justice. He calls His people to reflect these attributes in their dealings. The principle also connects to the ninth commandment, which forbids bearing false witness (Exodus 20:16). Both passages stress the community’s need for honest testimony.

Ancient Israel’s legal procedures do not apply directly today, but the broader principles remain. Believers are called to pursue truth in all interactions, stand against deception, and act justly and honestly. This includes supporting fair legal procedures and rejecting false witness in daily life.

Truthfulness protects the community’s integrity. When we speak honestly, we honor God and safeguard our neighbors from harm. The verse reminds us to be careful and deliberate in judgment, avoiding gossip, slander, or any form of falsehood.

God values truth so highly that He built it into Israel’s legal system. As His people, we are to reflect that same commitment. Let us examine our own words and actions, ensuring they align with God’s truth and justice.
