Deuteronomy 19:3
Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the Lord thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.
Deuteronomy 19:3 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible, attributed to Moses. It records Moses’ speeches to the Israelites just before they entered the Promised Land. This verse belongs to a section that establishes cities of refuge for those who commit unintentional manslaughter.
Meaning
Deuteronomy 19:3 commands the Israelites to prepare a way and divide the land God is giving them into three parts, so that any slayer may flee there. The phrase “prepare thee a way” means to make an open and ready road, ensuring access to these cities. The land is to be divided into three parts so that a place of refuge is close at hand for anyone who has unintentionally caused the death of another person. The purpose of these cities was to provide a safe haven for the manslayer from the avenger of blood, preventing immediate retaliation and ensuring justice.
Biblical connections
The following verses clarify that the slayer is one who kills his neighbor ignorantly, without prior hatred, such as the example of an axe head slipping from its handle while cutting wood (Deuteronomy 19:4-5). This instruction emphasizes God’s concern for justice and fairness even in cases of accidental death, providing a way of escape and protection.
Application
Seeking Justice: The principle behind this verse encourages believers to pursue justice and fairness in their dealings with others. It reminds us to consider the intent and circumstances behind someone’s actions before passing judgment.
Extending Mercy: Just as God showed mercy by providing cities of refuge, we should also seek to extend mercy and grace to others. This includes being willing to forgive and provide opportunities for redemption when someone unintentionally causes harm.
Appreciating God’s Provision: Reflecting on the inheritance that the Israelites received, we should be grateful for God’s provision in our lives. We can express gratitude by using the resources He has given us to create a safe and just environment for others.
Reflection
The division of the land into three parts ensures that no one has to travel too far to find refuge. This reflects God’s provision and care for individuals in difficult circumstances, ensuring that the innocent are protected from vengeance. The verse also shows the importance of preparing infrastructure and making provision for justice within the community God is establishing.
