Deuteronomy 2:27
Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.
Deuteronomy 2:27 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ final words to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses recounts an event from the wilderness journey, specifically Israel’s request to King Sihon of the Amorites for peaceful passage through his territory.
Meaning
The request is simple and respectful: “Let me pass through thy land.” Moses promises that Israel will keep to the “high way,” the main public road, and will not turn aside to the right or the left. This commitment meant they would not enter fields or vineyards to gather food or trample crops. The language of not turning aside is both literal and figurative, reflecting a disciplined, straightforward conduct that avoids taking advantage of permission granted.
Biblical connections
This request mirrors an earlier one made to the Edomites in Numbers 20:17, where Israel similarly promised to stay on the king’s highway and not turn aside. The same phrase appears in Deuteronomy 5:32-33, where Israel is commanded not to turn aside to the right or left but to walk in all the way the LORD has commanded, so that they may live and it may be well with them. Thus, the language of not turning aside is used both for literal travel and for obedience to God’s commands.
Application
Moses’ approach to the Amorite king demonstrates respectful diplomacy. He asks permission rather than forcing his way, showing a willingness to avoid unnecessary conflict. This teaches us to honor the boundaries and rights of others, seeking peaceful resolutions in our interactions. Just as the Israelites stayed on the highway, we are called to keep our word and not take advantage of the trust others place in us.
Furthermore, the commitment to stay on the path signifies trust in God’s guidance. The Israelites followed the route set before them, relying on God’s direction rather than taking matters into their own hands. In our lives, we can trust that God will guide us along the right path if we seek His wisdom. We should avoid detours or straying from His plans, knowing that He knows what is best for us.
Reflection
Deuteronomy 2:27 reminds us of the importance of respecting boundaries, seeking peaceful resolutions, and trusting in God’s guidance. By applying these principles, we can cultivate a spirit of respect, diplomacy, and trust in our relationships with others and with God.
