Deuteronomy 2:37
Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the Lord our God forbad us.
Deuteronomy 2:37 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy contains Moses’ final address to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this passage, Moses recounts the journey through the wilderness and the encounters with various nations, specifically the victory over Sihon the Amorite. After the LORD gave Israel all the cities from Aroer on the Arnon to Gilead (Deuteronomy 2:36), this verse records the boundary of that conquest.
Meaning
The verse lists what Israel did not take: the land of the children of Ammon, the region along the river Jabbok, the cities in the mountains, and any other place the LORD their God had forbidden. The Ammonites were descendants of Lot, Abraham’s nephew, and God had told Israel not to meddle with them because He had given their land to Lot’s descendants as a possession (Deuteronomy 2:19). The Jabbok was a tributary of the Jordan River and served as a natural boundary. The cities in the mountains were part of the territory Israel was to avoid.
This verse emphasizes that Israel’s victories were not indiscriminate; they were guided by divine instruction. The LORD gave them what He promised, and they respected the boundaries He set. Obedience includes knowing what not to take as well as what to receive.
Biblical connections
God’s commandments are based on His divine wisdom and purposes, even when they are not fully understood. In this instance, God had a specific plan for the Israelites’ journey and the territories they were to possess. Trusting in God’s wisdom and obeying His instructions is a recurring theme throughout the Bible.
Application
This passage demonstrates the importance of obedience to God’s guidance. God’s people must follow His commands precisely, even when they are victorious. God’s gifts are given according to His will, not human ambition. Believers today are called to discern and honor the boundaries God sets, trusting that His restrictions are as purposeful as His provisions.
Reflection
Consider areas where God may be calling you to refrain, even when you have the ability or opportunity to proceed. Obedience to God’s specific commands is a mark of faith and trust in His greater plan.
