Deuteronomy 24:18

But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the Lord thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to do this thing.

Context

Moses speaks these words to Israel just before they enter the Promised Land. The surrounding laws in Deuteronomy 24:17-22 protect the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow. This verse gives the reason behind those commands: Israel must remember their own slavery in Egypt and the LORD’s redemption. The immediate context also includes laws about hired servants and gleanings, all motivated by the same remembrance.

Meaning

The word “remember” is more than recalling a fact. It means to let the past shape present action. Israel had been bondmen, helpless and oppressed. The LORD alone redeemed them. That memory of deliverance becomes the foundation for how they treat others. Because God showed mercy, they must show mercy. This pattern links God’s saving action to the command for ethical conduct.

Biblical connections

This pattern appears again in Deuteronomy 15:15 and 24:22. In each place, the memory of Egypt leads to generous treatment of the poor. This verse links God’s grace to human responsibility. The memory of redemption is a living motive for justice and love. When we see the stranger, the widow, or the orphan, we are to see ourselves as God saw us, and respond as He did. Because God redeemed His people, they must show mercy to those in need.
