Deuteronomy 25:16

Listen to this article

For all that doe such things, and all that doe vnrighteously, are an abomination vnto the Lord thy God. Deuteronomy 25:16 (KJV)

In the preceding verses (Deuteronomy 25:13‑15) the focus is on honest business practices and the use of accurate weights and measures. This verse continues that theme, emphasizing the righteousness and integrity expected of the people of Israel.

The verse states that those who engage in dishonest practices and unrighteous acts are an “abomination” to the Lord. The word signifies something detestable, abhorrent, or morally repugnant in God’s sight.

It implies that God expects His people to conduct themselves with honesty, fairness, and integrity in all aspects of life, including business dealings. This standard of righteousness is not limited to commercial activity but extends to every area of living.

The passage highlights the importance of character and ethical behavior before God. It stresses that God values honesty and righteousness, and that anyone who practices deceit, fraud, or any form of unrighteousness is regarded as abominable.

While the specific regulations mentioned in Deuteronomy 25:16 may not be directly applicable in modern society, the underlying principle of honesty and integrity remains relevant. Believers are called to live upright lives, be truthful in their dealings, and treat others justly.

Jesus reinforced the importance of righteousness and integrity in His teaching. In Matthew 5:20 He said, “For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.” He

emphasized that righteousness must go beyond external observance and reflect a transformed heart.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 25:16 underscores the importance of honesty and integrity in the lives of believers. It reminds us that God desires His people to reflect His righteous character. Though the original context relates to business practices, the principle extends to all areas of life, emphasizing the significance of righteousness in our relationship with God and others.
