Deuteronomy 25:15
But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Deuteronomy 25:15 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of Moses’ final speeches to Israel as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. He is reiterating God’s commandments, reminding the people of their covenant relationship with Him.
In ancient times, goods were often traded by weight or measure. Merchants could easily cheat by using false weights or measures, so God gave specific laws to protect fairness in commerce.
Meaning
The command is clear: “But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have.” The word “perfect” means complete, full, and accurate, without tampering or manipulation. “Just” means righteous and fair, conforming to the standard of the land.
This requirement applies to both weights and measures, covering all forms of trade. It demands honesty and integrity in every transaction, reflecting God’s own character of truth and justice.
The verse concludes with a promise: “that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” This is a common biblical blessing for obedience, linking faithful conduct with well-being and longevity in the land.
Biblical connections
The immediate context, Deuteronomy 25:13-16, forbids having differing weights and measures and declares that those who deal dishonestly are an abomination to the Lord. This shows how seriously God views cheating in business.
The promise of long life for obedience is also seen in Deuteronomy 4:40, where God ties blessing to keeping His commandments.
Application
This verse teaches that God cares about integrity in everyday business, not just religious rituals. True worship includes ethical conduct in all dealings.
For the Christian, this calls for honesty in work, trade, and all transactions. It means using fair measures in our dealings, whether in selling goods, handling money, or keeping promises.
By conducting ourselves with honesty and fairness, we reflect the character of God and contribute to a just and righteous society.
Reflection
God is a God of truth and justice, who delights in honesty and detests deceit. This verse reminds us that our daily business matters to Him and that obedience brings His blessing.
Let us examine our own practices, asking God to help us be people of integrity in all areas of life, trusting that He who sees all will bless our faithfulness.
