Deuteronomy 31:4
And the Lord shall doe vnto them, as hee did to Sihon, and to Og Kings of the Amorites, and vnto the land of them, whom he destroyed. Deuteronomy 31:4 (KJV)
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and forms part of the Torah, which contains the laws and instructions given by God to the Israelites. It is traditionally written by Moses and records his final words to the people before they enter the Promised Land.
The verse refers to the victories that the Israelites experienced under Moses’ leadership. Sihon was king of the Amorites and Og was king of Bashan; the Israelites defeated both in battle and took possession of their lands. These historical events illustrate God’s active involvement in delivering His people.
The passage emphasizes God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. In the surrounding verses Moses assures the Israelites that God will go before them and will do to the Canaanite nations what He did to Sihon and Og. This reminder encourages the people to trust in God’s guidance and power as they face future challenges.
It also serves as a warning about the consequences of disobedience. Earlier in Deuteronomy Moses recounts the wilderness journey and notes how the people’s lack of trust delayed their entry into the Promised Land. By mentioning the destruction of Sihon, Og, and their territories, Moses warns that turning away from God’s commands brings judgment.
The same principle applies today: just as God was faithful to the Israelites in the past, He remains faithful to His promises now. Believers can rely on His guidance and provision in their own lives, confident that He will act on their behalf.
Finally, the victories over Sihon and Og demonstrate God’s supreme power over the enemies of His people. As believers, we can find comfort in knowing that God is greater than any opposition or challenge we may encounter, and that He will act on our behalf just as He did for Israel.
