Deuteronomy 31:3

The Lord thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the Lord hath said.

Deuteronomy 31:3 (KJV)

Deuteronomy records Moses’ final addresses to Israel before they enter the Promised Land. In chapter 31, Moses prepares the people for his coming death and appoints Joshua to lead them into Canaan. This moment marks a major transition, as the people are about to cross the Jordan and face nations that occupy the land.

Moses assures Israel that the Lord their God will go over before them. This is a promise of divine presence and guidance. As they faced nations occupying Canaan, God would go ahead, leading the way. This assurance strengthened their faith and encouraged trust in His protection. The verse emphasizes that God Himself takes the lead; He does not send His people into danger alone.

The verse also declares that God will destroy those nations and that Israel will possess the land. Victory did not depend on their own strength or military power, but on God’s intervention. They were called to obey and trust, knowing that His presence guaranteed the outcome. God’s promise is certain, and His power is sufficient to fulfill it.

Moses names Joshua as the one who will go over before the people. Joshua had served as Moses’ assistant and was chosen by God to succeed him. Moses had laid hands on him, commissioning him for the task. Joshua’s faithful and courageous leadership would be essential in bringing Israel into the land. This shows that human leadership is appointed by God and operates under His sovereign direction.

This promise echoes how the Lord led Israel through the wilderness, going before them in a pillar of cloud and fire. Now He would go before them into the land. Joshua’s appointment also shows the continuity of God’s plan through leaders He raises up, as the book of Joshua later confirms. God’s presence goes ahead of His people, securing victory and enabling them to take possession of what He has promised.

  • Trust in God’s guidance. Israel was called to trust that God knew the way. In our own journeys, we face challenges and uncertainties, but we can be confident that He goes before us. He will lead us as we seek His direction and rely on His wisdom.

  • Rely on God’s strength. The people learned that victory came from God’s power, not their own ability. When we face obstacles, we can lean on His might rather than our own. Our confidence rests in Him, who is able to overcome any opposition.

  • Support godly leadership. The transition from Moses to Joshua reminds us that God appoints leaders for His people. Just as Joshua was prepared and commissioned, leaders today are raised up by God. We should support and pray for them, recognizing His hand upon their work.

God’s promise to go before His people calls us to move forward in faith. When we face transitions or daunting tasks, we can remember that He is already at work ahead of us. Our part is to obey His commands and trust His leading, knowing He is faithful to complete what He has begun. He goes before us, and He will enable us to possess what He has promised.
