Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Deuteronomy 31:6 (KJV)

Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Bible, attributed to Moses. It contains his final messages to Israel before they enter the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses encourages the people to be strong and courageous as they face the challenges ahead. He knows he will soon die and is preparing to hand leadership to Joshua. The nation is entering a new phase, with formidable enemies and unknown trials before them. This is a moment of transition, and Moses speaks to steady the people’s hearts.

The command to be strong and courageous implies that the path ahead is difficult. It acknowledges that the journey of faith is not always easy, yet God’s people must remain steadfast. Strength and courage do not come from our own abilities but from deep trust in God and His promises. Fear is a common human response to uncertainty, but God repeatedly calls His people not to fear. Here, Moses tells Israel not to be afraid of their enemies. The basis for this courage is not human ability but the certain presence of God. God calls us today to trust Him and not fear the trials we face.

Moses reassures Israel that the Lord their God is with them. This promise means they are not alone. God’s presence and guidance will accompany them every step. The promise that God “will not fail thee, nor forsake thee” is the foundation for the command to fear not. This assurance is not conditional on Israel’s worthiness but is rooted in God’s covenant faithfulness. The theme of God’s presence with His people in trials culminates in the New Testament assurance of Christ’s abiding presence, as seen in Hebrews 13:5.

  • Trust in God: We are reminded to trust in God’s faithfulness and promises. Even in difficult situations, we find strength and courage knowing God is with us.

  • Overcoming Fear: Rather than letting fear paralyze us, we choose to rely on God’s strength. Trusting Him helps us move forward in faith.

  • God’s Presence: We can take comfort that God is always present, walking alongside us, providing guidance, comfort, and support.

  • God’s Faithfulness: Reflecting on God’s faithfulness in history and in our lives strengthens our trust in Him.

God’s faithfulness is unwavering. Moses assures Israel that God will not fail or abandon them, and this promise extends to all believers. God is trustworthy and will never leave us. Even in trials, God remains steadfast and true to His word. Our courage is not based on our own strength but on the certain presence of the LORD our God, who goes with us and will not fail us. This promise is a powerful source of strength for believers today, who likewise face difficulties and uncertainties.
