Deuteronomy 32:18

Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.

Deuteronomy 32:18 (KJV)

Deuteronomy 32 is known as the Song of Moses, which he delivered to the Israelites just before his death. This chapter contains a poetic reflection on Israel’s history, God’s faithfulness, and the consequences of turning away from Him. The verse in focus, Deuteronomy 32:18, highlights the Israelites’ forgetfulness and ingratitude towards God.

In this verse, God is referred to as “the Rock”. This metaphor emphasises His stability, strength, and reliability. The Israelites, who were descended from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, were to remember that it was God who brought them into being as a nation. This reference to the Rock signifies the divine foundation upon which the Israelites were built.

The language of begetting and forming underscores that God is the source of Israel’s life and identity. The accusation is one of ingratitude and spiritual forgetfulness: despite God’s covenant faithfulness, Israel has neglected and deserted Him. The verse is repeated in different words to emphasize their wretched ingratitude.

Despite their privileged position as God’s chosen people, the Israelites became forgetful and unmindful of their Creator. They allowed themselves to be influenced by the surrounding pagan nations and turned away from the true worship of God. They neglected to acknowledge His blessings and provision throughout their history.

The act of forgetting God goes beyond mere absentmindedness; it signifies a spiritual condition characterised by neglect and disregard for the Almighty. The Israelites allowed other gods and idols to take His place in their hearts. This forgetfulness led them astray and opened the door to idolatry and disobedience.

Forgetting God had serious implications for the Israelites. It resulted in a loss of divine protection, guidance, and favour. In subsequent verses, Moses describes the calamities that would befall the Israelites due to their turning away from God. These consequences were meant to discipline and correct them, leading them back to a place of repentance and dependence on God.

Although Deuteronomy 32:18 specifically addresses the ancient Israelites, it carries timeless lessons for believers today. It serves as a reminder to remain mindful and grateful for God’s faithfulness in our lives. We should never forget the Rock from which we were hewn, acknowledging that our very existence and blessings come from Him. It also warns us against the dangers of spiritual complacency and the lure of worldly idols that can distract us from wholehearted devotion to God.

Deuteronomy 32:18 highlights the forgetfulness and ingratitude of the Israelites towards God, their Rock and Creator. It serves as a reminder for us to remain mindful, grateful, and steadfast in our devotion to God, recognising His faithfulness and provision in our lives.
