Deuteronomy 32:49
Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:
Deuteronomy 32:49 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the Song of Moses, a poetic and prophetic reflection on God’s faithfulness and Israel’s history. On the same day, God told Moses to ascend the mountain and die there because he had broken faith with God at the waters of Meribah-kadesh (Deuteronomy 32:48-52). The Abarim range is also mentioned in Numbers 21:11, giving geographical continuity to Israel’s journey.
Meaning
God commanded Moses to climb Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, opposite Jericho. From there, Moses was to behold the land of Canaan, which God was giving to the children of Israel as a possession. The command to “behold” the land emphasizes that Moses would see the fulfillment of God’s promise from a distance but not participate in it. This was a bittersweet moment: Moses could see the land but could not enter it.
Biblical connections
The promise of the land traces back to God’s covenant with Abraham (Genesis 12:7), reaffirmed throughout the wilderness journey. Mount Nebo provided Moses with a view of this long-awaited fulfillment. Because of his disobedience at Meribah (Numbers 20:12), God did not allow him to enter the Promised Land. Instead, God gave him the opportunity to see it from a distance, a moment that showcased both divine discipline and mercy.
Application
This verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness in keeping His word. Despite Moses’ shortcomings, God still allowed him to witness the land He had promised to the Israelites. The passage highlights the importance of obedience while affirming God’s enduring love and faithfulness. At times, God may allow us to see the fulfillment of His promises in our lives even if we do not fully partake in them. The image encourages believers to trust in God’s sovereignty and His plan, even when the full picture is not yet clear.
Reflection
Moses followed God’s instruction without protest, demonstrating obedience despite personal disappointment. His example teaches us to trust in God’s promises even when we do not experience their fulfillment in the way we might expect. The view from Mount Nebo serves as a tangible reminder of God’s covenant faithfulness. For the Christian reader, it points to the importance of trusting God’s promises even when full fulfillment is not experienced in this life, and it foreshadows the greater inheritance in Christ, though this connection is typological and not explicit in the text.
