Deuteronomy 33:20
And of Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head.
Deuteronomy 33:20 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ final words to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. In chapter 33, he blesses each tribe, and verse 20 addresses Gad, the tribe descended from Jacob’s son Gad.
Gad settled east of the Jordan with Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in land suited for livestock (Numbers 32:1-5). The Gadites were known as skilled warriors (1 Chronicles 12:8). Their territory was fertile, and they prospered there.
Meaning
The blessing “Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad” points to God as the source of the tribe’s growth in territory and numbers. This enlargement came through victories, such as the conquest over the Hagarites (1 Chronicles 5:18-22). God granted expansion, and the tribe received it.
The image of Gad dwelling “as a lion” conveys boldness and security. A lion rests confidently because it fears no threat. This strength was not for aggression but for defending what God had given. The phrase “teareth the arm with the crown of the head” pictures a lion’s fierce attack, striking both the enemy’s strength (the arm) and its leader (the head). It shows complete victory over opposition.
Biblical connections
Gad’s inheritance came according to God’s plan, showing His faithfulness to His promises. The lion-like courage was rooted in divine blessing, not in self-reliance. Throughout Scripture, God equips His people for the battles they face, just as He did for Gad.
Application
Believers can recognize God’s hand in their growth and rely on His strength in spiritual battles. The same God who enlarged Gad and gave him courage equips His people today to face opposition with confidence. When we face challenges, we can trust that God is the source of our strength and growth.
Reflection
Consider how God has enlarged your life through opportunities, relationships, or spiritual growth. Trust that He who blessed Gad with strength and victory is faithful to equip you for the challenges ahead. Rest in His provision, knowing that He who began a good work will complete it.
