Deuteronomy 4:3
Your eyes haue seene what the Lord did because of Baal Peor: for all the men that followed Baal Peor, the Lord thy God hath destroyed them from among you. Deuteronomy 4:3 (KJV)
The book of Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible and consists of Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites as they stand on the brink of entering the Promised Land. In these addresses Moses recalls Israel’s history, reiterates God’s laws, and renews the covenant relationship. Deuteronomy 4:3 calls the listeners to remember the great deeds of the LORD and to examine whether He remains present among them.
Baal‑peor was a Moabite deity worshiped by neighboring peoples. The cult of Baal‑peor involved sexual immorality and the offering of sacrifices to a false god, practices that were expressly forbidden by the LORD.
The verse refers to the incident recorded in Numbers 25. While camped on the plains of Moab, some Israelite men engaged in illicit relations with Moabite women and participated in Baal‑peor worship. Their idolatry provoked God’s anger and resulted in a severe divine judgment.
God’s response was swift and decisive. In His righteous judgment He struck down many who had taken part in the Baal‑peor worship, demonstrating His intolerance of idolatry and the seriousness of violating His commandments. After Phinehas zealously executed an Israelite man and a Midianite woman, the plague was halted, sparing the remaining people from further immediate destruction.
Faithfulness and Obedience – The Baal‑peor episode underscores the necessity of steadfast devotion to God and careful obedience to His commands. The Israelites’ disobedience led to harsh consequences, reminding believers today of the cost of turning away from the covenant.
The Dangers of Idolatry – Idolatry, the worship of false gods and the pursuit of worldly desires, repeatedly leads people astray and provokes divine wrath. This account serves as a warning against the allure of such practices.
God’s Holiness and Justice – The judgment at Baal‑peor reveals God’s holy character and His just response to deliberate rebellion. It reinforces the importance of revering God and honoring His statutes.
Forgiveness and Redemption – Although severe punishment was administered, the episode also opened a path for repentance. Subsequent Scripture shows God’s mercy and continued guidance for Israel, illustrating that redemption remains available to those who turn back to Him.
