When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come vpon thee, euen in the latter dayes, if thou turne to the Lord thy God, and shalt be obedient vnto his voice: Deuteronomy 4:30 (KJV)

“And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.” “And thou shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and thou shalt obey his voice, and keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, according unto all that I command thee this day.” “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, by all the days of thy life; and thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, and shalt do that which is right in his eyes.”

Context: The book of Deuteronomy is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah, which comprises the first five books of the Bible. It contains Moses’ final words to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this particular verse, Moses is addressing the people regarding their response after experiencing hardship and exile.

Tribulation and Challenges: The preceding verse (Deuteronomy 30:1) describes circumstances of tribulation and challenges, including being driven among the nations due to disobedience. It is a realistic expectation for believers that they will encounter difficulties in their journey of faith.

Turning to the Lord: The verse emphasizes the proper response when facing such trials: turning to the Lord. It highlights the importance of seeking God’s presence, guidance, and help during difficult times. Rather than relying on their own strength or seeking other solutions, the people are encouraged to turn their hearts and minds toward God.

Obedience to God’s Voice: The verse stresses the significance of obedience to God’s voice. Obedience demonstrates trust and reliance on God’s wisdom and guidance. It involves actively listening to God’s commands and following His instructions. True obedience requires surrendering one’s will to align with God’s will, even in the midst of tribulation.

Application to Believers Today: While the verse was initially addressed to the ancient Israelites, its principles remain relevant to believers today. When faced with tribulation or challenges, Christians are encouraged to turn to the Lord and seek His guidance through prayer, reading His Word, and relying on His strength. Obedience to God’s voice, revealed through Scripture and the Holy Spirit, becomes a vital part of navigating through difficult times.
