Deuteronomy 4:35
Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the Lord he is God; there is none else beside him.
Deuteronomy 4:35 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and the last book of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, attributed to Moses. This verse belongs to Moses’ address to the Israelites just before they enter the Promised Land. He reminds them of God’s revelation and sovereign position, emphasizing the uniqueness and supremacy of the Lord.
Meaning
The verse declares that God showed Himself to Israel through mighty acts, particularly in Egypt, so that they might know that the LORD alone is God. The phrase “there is none else beside him” is a direct affirmation of monotheism, the central principle of Israelite faith. This knowledge is not abstract; it is intended to lead to heartfelt acknowledgment and faithful response.
Biblical connections
Deuteronomy 4:39 reinforces this truth, calling Israel to “know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.” The same exclusive claim appears in Isaiah 45:5, “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me,” and in Isaiah 44:6, “I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.” These passages consistently teach God’s exclusive divinity.
Application
Exclusive devotion: Believers are called to worship and serve the one true God alone. This verse guards against idolatry or putting anything or anyone above God.
God’s uniqueness: Reflecting on God’s supremacy deepens reverence and awe, encouraging a deeper understanding of His character through prayer, Scripture, and fellowship.
Sharing God’s revelation: As Israel was responsible to pass down knowledge of God’s greatness, believers are called to share the truth of God’s Word and His redemptive work, proclaiming the exclusive lordship of Jesus Christ.
Reflection
The knowledge that the LORD is God and there is none else should move us to worship, obedience, and faithfulness, recognizing Him as the one true God.
