Deuteronomy 6:17
Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.
Deuteronomy 6:17 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ farewell address to Israel, given just before they entered the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses calls the people to keep the commandments, testimonies, and statutes of the Lord. This call follows the warning in Deuteronomy 6:16 not to test God, recalling the incident at Massah. The next verse, Deuteronomy 6:18, connects obedience to doing what is right and good in the LORD’s sight, so that it may go well with Israel. Such obedience is rooted in the covenant relationship between God and His people, a response to His prior acts and commands.
Meaning
“Ye shall diligently keep” emphasizes active, faithful, and continuous obedience. It is not passive or occasional but requires intentional effort. “The commandments of the LORD your God” refers to the moral and ethical laws that guide the people in their relationship with God and with one another. “His testimonies” are God’s recorded acts, declarations, and revelations that bear witness to His character and will. “His statutes” are specific regulations governing religious, social, and ceremonial life. Together, these three terms cover every area of life, showing that God’s instructions are comprehensive. The phrase “diligently keep” highlights the need for wholehearted effort in obeying God’s will.
Biblical connections
This verse is part of the larger passage that includes the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-9), a fundamental statement of Jewish faith. The Shema emphasizes the oneness of God and the call to love Him wholeheartedly. Obedience here is not a way to earn salvation but the proper response of a covenant people to their God. For Christian readers, the moral core of these commands remains binding, while the ceremonial and judicial laws are understood in light of the New Testament.
Application
Reflect on your own life and consider areas where you may need to align more closely with God’s commandments. Are there areas where you have been lax in your obedience? Pray for strength and guidance to diligently follow His ways. Engage in regular study and meditation on God’s Word, including His commandments, testimonies, and statutes. Seek to understand His instructions more deeply and apply them to your life. If you are a parent, teacher, or leader, take the opportunity to teach and model diligent obedience to God’s commandments. Help others understand the significance of obeying God and the blessings that come from it. This call to diligent obedience remains relevant for Christians today as an expression of love for God and faithfulness to His revealed will.
Reflection
Diligent obedience is a wholehearted commitment to live according to God’s standards. It recognizes His authority and responds to His love. This verse reminds us that God’s instructions are not burdensome but are given for our good. As we obey, we demonstrate our love for Him and our trust in His wisdom. Let this verse encourage you to pursue faithful obedience in every part of life, knowing that God sees your efforts and honors those who seek to follow Him.
