Deuteronomy 6:25
And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.
Deuteronomy 6:25 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ final speeches to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. This verse closes an instruction that begins with the call to love the LORD with all the heart, soul, and might (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). Moses speaks to a people about to receive the land God promised, and he ties their life in that land to faithful obedience.
Meaning
The phrase “our righteousness” means a right relationship with God expressed through covenant faithfulness. It is not human merit earned by works, but the blessing and benefit that come from walking in God’s ways. The condition is complete: “all these commandments,” with no exception. Obedience is to be done “before the LORD our God,” meaning in His presence, with Him as witness and standard.
The words “as he hath commanded us” stress exact obedience. Israel must not add to or subtract from God’s revealed will. This is not selective rule-keeping but wholehearted devotion that flows from love and reverence for God.
Biblical connections
The New Testament shows that the law was a tutor to lead people to Christ (Galatians 3:24). Christ perfectly kept the law on behalf of His people, and the righteousness of God is now revealed apart from the law, yet witnessed by the law and the prophets (Romans 3:21). For believers, this verse points to Christ as the fulfillment of the law’s demand.
Application
Christians are not justified by works, but obedience remains a vital response to God’s grace. A life that honors God’s precepts reflects the righteousness granted through faith in Jesus. The call to observe “all these commandments” reminds believers to pursue complete, not partial, obedience as an expression of love.
Reflection
True righteousness is ultimately a gift from God, yet the command to obey remains. Let this verse lead you to thank Christ for His perfect obedience and to ask the Spirit for strength to walk in God’s ways daily.
