Deuteronomy 7:9

Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

Deuteronomy 7:9 (KJV)

Deuteronomy records Moses’ speeches to Israel on the plains of Moab, just before they entered the Promised Land. Here Moses calls the people to know that the LORD their God is the one true God, who is faithful. This call follows the reminder that God chose Israel not because of their greatness, but because of His love and His promise to their ancestors.

The verse begins with the command to “know” that the LORD thy God is God. This knowing is not mere information about God. It means to recognize and hold firmly that He is the sovereign Lord, and to live in a personal relationship with Him. The verse then describes God as “the faithful God.” His faithfulness means He is unchanging, reliable, and always true to His word. He keeps covenant and mercy with those who love Him and keep His commandments. A covenant is a solemn agreement between God and His people. God faithfully keeps His side of the agreement, and He shows mercy, which is His compassion and kindness to those who do not deserve it.

This verse points forward to the New Testament, where God’s faithfulness is fully shown in Jesus Christ. In Christ, God keeps His covenant promises and demonstrates His steadfast love to all who believe. The condition in this verse, loving God and keeping His commandments, is not a way to earn God’s favor. Rather, it is the proper response of a people who have already received His faithful love. As 1 John 5:3 explains, loving God means obeying His commandments, and this obedience flows from a heart that trusts Him.

Because God is faithful, His people can trust Him completely. When we face uncertainty, we can remember that He never changes and always keeps His promises. Our part is to love Him and obey His commandments. This love is not merely a feeling; it is shown through our actions and choices. We can also take comfort that God’s mercy is available to us when we fail, for He is compassionate and forgiving.

Consider how you can grow in knowing God personally, not just knowing about Him. Think about the ways you have seen His faithfulness in your life and in the lives of your family. Let this verse encourage you to trust His covenant love, which endures to a thousand generations. As you love Him and keep His commandments, you can rest in the certainty that He will never leave you nor forsake you.
