Deuteronomy 9:10
And the Lord delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the Lord spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.
Deuteronomy 9:10 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ farewell speeches to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. Here Moses recalls the day at Mount Sinai, also called Horeb, when God made a covenant with the people and gave them the Ten Commandments. This event was not private. The whole community gathered to hear God’s voice and to enter a binding relationship with Him.
Meaning
The “two tables of stone” were the tablets on which God wrote the Ten Commandments. The phrase “written with the finger of God” shows that the law came directly from God, not from human invention. This gave the commandments divine authority and lasting importance. The writing was God’s own doing, and it set the law apart as holy and permanent.
The words on the tablets were exactly what the LORD spoke “out of the midst of the fire.” The fire displayed God’s holy presence and power. The “day of the assembly” reminds us that the whole community gathered together to hear God’s voice and enter into a binding relationship with Him. God did not give His law in secret. He spoke openly, and the people heard His words.
Biblical connections
Exodus 31:18 records that God gave Moses the two tablets “written with the finger of God.” Later, after Moses broke the first tablets because of Israel’s sin, God wrote the same words on new stones (Exodus 34:1). This shows that God’s commands remain constant even when people fail. The law was not changed or weakened by human disobedience. God’s standard stayed the same.
Application
God’s commandments are not outdated rules. They reveal His holy character and show how His people should live. Because the law came from God Himself, we can trust it completely. We are called to obey, not to earn salvation, but to live in a faithful covenant relationship with Him. When we read the Bible, we are reading the words that God Himself has given. His commands are for our good and for His glory.
Reflection
God still speaks with authority today through His Word. The same God who wrote on stone now writes His law on human hearts through the Holy Spirit. Let us respond with reverence and gratitude, seeking to follow His righteous ways in every part of life. His words are true, and His covenant stands forever.
