Deuteronomy Chapter 18

Summery

Deuteronomy 18 contains instructions given by Moses to the Israelites regarding their relationship with God and the role of prophets in their midst. Moses reminds the people that they should not imitate the detestable practices of the surrounding nations, such as sacrificing their children to false gods. Instead, God will raise up prophets from among the Israelites to guide and communicate His will to them. These prophets will speak in God’s name and provide divine revelations.

Moses emphasizes the importance of listening to and obeying these prophets, warning that those who disregard their words will be held accountable by God. He further cautions the people against seeking guidance from diviners, sorcerers, and fortune-tellers, as these practices are considered abominable to God.

The chapter also highlights the specific responsibilities of the Levites, the priestly tribe, who are not allotted a land inheritance like the other tribes. Instead, they are to be supported by the offerings and sacrifices of the people. Moses assures the Levites that God will be their portion and inheritance, and they should focus on serving Him and teaching His laws to the people.
