Ecclesiastes 7:17

Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

Ecclesiastes 7:17 (KJV)

Ecclesiastes comes from King Solomon, who searched for life’s true meaning. In chapter 7 he gives practical wisdom for living in a fallen world. Verse 16 warns against being too righteous or too wise in self-made ways. Verse 17 then balances that warning by telling us not to go to the opposite extreme.

Solomon says, “Be not over much wicked.” This does not mean a little wickedness is allowed. It is a strong way of saying, “Do not be wicked at all.” The word “foolish” here means moral folly, living as if there is no God and no moral order. Both paths lead to ruin.

The question “why shouldest thou die before thy time?” is a practical warning. Reckless sin and folly often bring premature death through natural consequences, divine judgment, or the self-destructive nature of sin. This is not a promise that every sinner dies young, but a reminder that sinful behavior frequently destroys life.

Proverbs 14:12 says there is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is death. That verse echoes the same truth: folly leads to destruction. In the New Testament, Christ is called our wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:30), and He delivers us from the wages of sin (Romans 6:23). True wisdom comes from God, not from human cleverness.

This verse calls us to avoid both extremes: self-righteousness and open sin. We should not trust in our own goodness, nor should we live carelessly. Instead, we are to walk in humble obedience to God. This balanced path brings peace and keeps us from unnecessary harm.

We also learn that our days are in God’s hands. We should not presume on His mercy by living recklessly. Every choice has consequences, and wisdom helps us make choices that honor God and protect our lives.

Consider your own habits and choices. Are there areas where you are drifting toward foolishness or sin? The warning in this verse is not meant to frighten us but to guide us. God’s wisdom leads to life, while folly leads to death. Choose the path of wisdom, and trust God to direct your days.
