Ephesians 2:6

“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

Context:To better understand this verse, we should consider its context within the broader passage. Ephesians 2:1-10 addresses the theme of salvation by grace through faith. It emphasizes that believers were once dead in their sins but have been made alive in Christ.

Salvation and Resurrection:The verse begins by stating that God “hath raised us up together.” This refers to the spiritual resurrection experienced by believers in Christ. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus conquered sin and death, and by faith in Him, believers are united with Him in His resurrection. This resurrection signifies a transformation from spiritual death to spiritual life.

Co-seated with Christ:The verse continues by stating that God has “made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” This phrase illustrates the positional reality of believers in Christ. As believers, we are not only raised up with Christ but also seated with Him in heavenly places. This imagery indicates our spiritual union and identification with Christ. It highlights our elevated status and the privileges we have as children of God.

Heavenly Places:The phrase “heavenly places” refers to the spiritual realm or the heavenly realities where Christ reigns. It signifies the realm of authority and blessings that believers partake in through their union with Christ. While believers are physically on Earth, they are spiritually connected to Christ and share in His heavenly blessings and authority.

In Christ Jesus:The phrase “in Christ Jesus” is of vital significance throughout the New Testament. It denotes the intimate, transformative union believers have with Christ through faith. By being “in Christ,” believers are united with Him in His death, burial, resurrection, and exaltation. This union brings about spiritual rebirth, reconciliation with God, and participation in the blessings and promises of God.
