Ephesians 5:15
“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise”
Context:The book of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus. In this specific verse, Paul addresses the behaviour and lifestyle of believers, urging them to live wisely and make the most of their time.
Walking Circumspectly:The phrase “walk circumspectly” implies living with careful attention and discernment. It means being watchful, cautious, and deliberate in our actions, decisions, and conduct. As Christians, we are called to be intentional about how we live, making wise choices in light of God’s guidance and principles.
Not as Fools:Paul contrasts walking circumspectly with walking as fools. This implies that acting without wisdom or understanding is akin to foolishness. As believers, we are encouraged to avoid foolishness, which can include reckless living, following worldly values, or making unwise decisions without considering the consequences.
As Wise:Instead of walking as fools, believers are exhorted to walk as wise individuals. Wisdom in the biblical context refers to the ability to apply godly knowledge and understanding to daily life. It involves seeking God’s guidance, aligning our choices with His will, and basing our decisions on the truths found in His Word, the Bible.
Application:
- Seek God’s Wisdom:Regularly spend time in prayer and studying the Bible to gain wisdom and discernment. God promises to provide wisdom to those who ask for it (James 1:5).
- Make Wise Choices:Consider the potential consequences of our actions and decisions, seeking to honour God in all areas of life. Seek godly counsel from mature believers when facing important decisions.
- Time Management:Recognise the brevity of life and the importance of using our time wisely. Prioritise activities that align with God’s will and contribute to our spiritual growth, serving others, and advancing God’s kingdom.
- Renewing Our Minds:Allow the Holy Spirit to transform our minds and hearts, enabling us to discern God’s will and make choices in line with His desires (Romans 12:2).
- Walk in Love:The surrounding verses of Ephesians 5 emphasise the call to love one another sacrificially, as Christ loved us. Walking in wisdom includes loving others and being mindful of how our actions impact them.
Remember, the goal is not merely to be knowledgeable, but to put wisdom into practice, allowing it to shape our behaviour and character.
By walking circumspectly and seeking wisdom, we can live in a manner that honours God, blesses others, and reflects the transforming power of the Gospel in our lives.
