Ephesians 5:7
Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

Context
Paul has just warned the Ephesians that sexual immorality, impurity, greed, obscene talk, and idolatry bring God’s wrath (Ephesians 5:3-6). The word “therefore” in verse 7 links the command directly to that warning. Believers are not to share in the sins that characterize the world around them.
Meaning
The Greek word translated “partakers” (symmetochoi) means joint participants or partners. It implies active involvement, not merely being near those who sin. Paul’s command is clear: do not become partners with those who practice the works of darkness. This is not a call to isolate from unbelievers, but a call to refuse complicity in their sinful deeds.
Biblical connections
This verse is part of Paul’s broader exhortation to live as children of light. In the following verses, he instructs believers to walk as light, to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, and to reprove them (Ephesians 5:8-11). The believer’s new identity in Christ transforms them from darkness to light, making separation from sin a natural expression of that new life.

Practically, this means examining our associations, activities, and choices. Are we participating in conversations, business practices, or entertainment that dishonor God? Are we silent when we should speak truth? The verse calls for discernment and accountability, urging us to distance ourselves from ungodly practices while still loving the people caught in them.
Separation from sin is not about self-righteousness but about holiness and purity. By refusing to partake in sinful actions, we maintain our integrity as followers of Christ and our witness to the world. Our commitment to holy living can draw others toward God, showing them a different way.
