Ephesians 6:22
Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.

Context
Paul wrote Ephesians from prison, and this verse closes the letter with a personal word about Tychicus. In the preceding verses, Paul has been teaching about spiritual warfare and the armor of God, urging believers to stand firm. Now he turns from that grand theme to a practical concern: the Ephesians need to know how he is doing, and they need encouragement. Verse 21 introduces Tychicus as a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, and verse 22 explains why Paul sent him.
Meaning
Paul says he sent Tychicus “for the same purpose” mentioned in verse 21: that the Ephesians might know Paul’s affairs and that Tychicus might comfort their hearts. The purpose is twofold. First, Tychicus was to inform. He would report on Paul’s circumstances and the situation of those with him, since they were all involved in the same gospel work. This kept the church connected to Paul despite his physical absence. Second, Tychicus was to comfort. The news of Paul’s well-being and continued dedication to the gospel would reassure and encourage the believers. The comfort was tied to the information: knowing Paul’s state and the unity of the believers was meant to strengthen their hearts.
Biblical connections
This verse reflects the practical outworking of Christian fellowship. Believers are called to care for one another through communication and mutual support, especially in times of trial. Tychicus is presented as a model of a faithful minister, entrusted with a mission of both information and consolation. This verse shows Paul’s pastoral heart. Even while imprisoned, he cared for the churches and sent a trusted companion to minister to them. It also shows that God uses people to meet needs. As we face trials or separation, we can look for the Tychicus figures God sends our way, and we can also be Tychicus for others, bringing both truthful news and heartfelt comfort.
