Esther 1:14

Posted on 18 May at 15:21
Listen to this article

“And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king’s face, and which sat the first in the kingdom.”

Esther 1:14 is part of the introduction to the book of Esther, which provides historical context for the events that follow. In this verse, we are introduced to a group of seven princes who held influential positions in the Persian and Median kingdom. These princes had the privilege of seeing the face of the king and were considered to be the highest-ranking officials in the kingdom.

To understand the significance of this verse, it’s essential to have some background information. The book of Esther is set during the time when the Jewish people were in exile in Persia. King Ahasuerus (also known as Xerxes I) ruled over a vast empire, including the provinces of Persia and Media.

In the preceding verses, the text describes a grand banquet hosted by King Ahasuerus that lasted for 180 days, displaying his riches and splendor to all his officials and nobles. On the seventh day of the feast, the king called for his queen, Vashti, to come before him and display her beauty to the guests. However, Queen Vashti refused to obey the king’s command, which led to her removal from her position as queen.

In Esther 1:14, the focus shifts to the introduction of the influential princes who had the privilege of seeing the king’s face and held positions of authority in the kingdom. The mention of their names – Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan – helps establish the historical setting and context of the story.

The significance of these princes lies in their subsequent role in the events that unfold in the book of Esther. After Queen Vashti’s removal, the king sought a new queen, and Esther, a Jewish woman who had been taken into the king’s palace, eventually becomes the chosen queen. Throughout the book, these princes play significant roles in advising the king and influencing his decisions.

While Esther 1:14 itself may seem like a straightforward list of names, it sets the stage for the narrative and introduces the key players who will influence the course of events in the book. It serves as a starting point for the dramatic and providential story of how Esther, through her bravery and faith, plays a crucial role in saving the Jewish people from destruction.

By examining the entire book of Esther, we can gain a deeper understanding of the themes of courage, faith, and divine providence, as well as the consequences of personal choices and the power of God’s intervention in human affairs.
